December Christmas Meeting

Had a great time at Jean’s new home and most of the group was in attendance!

Since the assigned book (from the Southern Sisters series by Anne George) was not a great read, not much time was spent discussing it.  We did learn that the author had died back in 2001.

We then embarked on “Dirty Santa” and had a great time.

The next meeting will be at Donna’s home and we hope it doesn’t snow!

The next read is “Losing London” by Joey Jones.

Be sure to check out the "Other Books" link at the right for new book ideas.

October Meeting

Thanks to Bonnie for hosting!!

Most who read Saint For All Occasions considered the book to be OK to middling.  We did discuss the Catholic religion and nuns.

Glad for Carol to join us!  Thanks again for Diane and Lindy's input to the blog.

December 3 is the date for our next meeting to be held at Jean's home.

As usual, we skip November due to Thanksgiving.

Remember - we'll play "Dirty Santa"  at our next meeting - so bring a small gift to share - $10-20 - wrapped but no tags!

The next read as chosen by Bonnie is "Murder On a Girl's Night Out" by Anne George.  It is the first in the Southern Sisters series.

Be sure to check out the "Other Books We're Reading" link for additional reading ideas.

September Meeting

Jean hosted the September meeting at her new house!

People had hard time getting into the August book, Anything is Possible by Elizabeth Strout and some were disappointed in ending . Most liked the short story format.

Jean offered to host this years December book club meeting, saying it's a good reason to decorate the new house for holiday!

Book for October is Saints for All Occasions by J. Courtney Sullivan

The October meeting will be at Bonnie's house.

August Meeting

We gathered at Vilma's lovely new house.  Thanks for all the yummy goodies (great cheesecake!)

We had an informative "visit" via conference call with the author of the August book - Iris Yang.  Lindy had met her on a cruise in Europe - it was nice to have a personal connection to the author.  It's a small world as she has a child that lives in Chatham County!

Iris was very energetic and answered all of our questions for almost 1/2 hour on the phone.   Many of the group had read the sequel to "Wings of a Flying Tiger" and Iris informed us that she is working on Book 3 of the series.

Our September read will be "Anything is Possible" by a familiar author (she wrote Olive Kitteredge) Elizabeth Strout.  We believe that Jean volunteered to host at her new house.  If that changes, we will update here.

Be sure to check out the list of other books members are reading.

July Meeting

After a "short summer break" we are back to our meeting schedule.  Lindy hosted, thanks!

We discussed "Crow" by Barbara Wright which was historical fiction regarding the killing of numerous Blacks in late 1890's in Wilmington, NC.  It was not a Black uprising but a planned slaughter of Blacks and especially those in power at that time.  We all enjoyed the book.

We will be meeting August 27 at Vilma's for the next meeting.

The book assigned for our August read is "Wings of a Flying Tiger" by Iris Yang.  She is the person Lindy met on her Ireland trip.

April Meeting

Thanks to MJ for the summary!

Meeting place: Sharon's lovely home!

Wine: a Wonderful Alsacian Pinot Gris and a Hess Cab Sav

Treats: a Fabulous Apple Tart (with thyme) made by Sharon Perry

Enjoyable discussion of "Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup", a nonfiction book by journalist John Carreyrou, released May 21, 2018. It covers the rise and fall of the firm Theranos, the multibillion-dollar biotech startup headed by Elizabeth Holmes – the enigmatic founder now charged with fraud. Everyone (who read it so far) said it was a page turner. Elizabeth Holmes is currently undergoing her trial. A film version is reportedly also in the works, starring Jennifer Lawrence as Elizabeth Holmes.

Next book:
Crow by Barbara Wright
(Juvenile Historical Fiction book, available at the library)

Many members will be out of town on the scheduled May 28th meeting date as this is the day after Memorial Day.   We'll need to come to a consensus to determine if we should postpone the meeting.

March Meeting

We were welcomed to Carolyn's beautiful new home where we were treated to great eats and wine.

There were 6 of us in attendance.

We all enjoyed "The Last Ballad" by Wiley Cash as we learned more about the many textile mills in the early 20th century.  The workers were treated poorly as the owners became richer and richer.  This story centered around Gastonia, NC and nearby communities.  People from the North came down there to help the workers organize (unionize) in order to be treated and paid more fairly.  This is historical fiction based on a true story.  Some of the characters are not fictional.  We liked how the characters were woven together in an interesting manner.

The first book that MJ had chosen was written by a relative of hers and is entitled "Keys of Life."  She began reading it and decided that it was not a good choice for the book club and chose the above.  However, I had already purchased from Amazon and am now reading it.  It has to do with the Angel Uriel and aspects of the dark people against the light people of the world.  I plan to complete the whole book.

Sharon Perry is our April 23rd hostess.  Carolyn chose "Bad Blood" by John Carreyrou.  It is an account about Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of "Theranos," and the founding then downfall of the company.

February Meeting

We met at Virlies with MJ acting as hostess.  The wine was good, a merlot, I think. Edit: the wine was Trinity Oaks  Pinot Noir.   We welcomed a new member, Sharon Perry.  She is a friend of Lindy's.  There were 7 of us in attendance.  We enjoyed "The Girl Who Fell From the Sky" and discussed alcoholism and other related issues brought out in the story.

Carolyn Boyd will be hosting the March 26 meeting at her new home.  At first MJ had chosen a book written by a cousin of hers.  She began reading it and found it not to be a good one for a book club.  She has changed her choice to "The Last Ballad" by Wiley Cash.  The library has several copies as it had been a library book club choice a while back.  It is also available as an e-book.
