Historical meetings - Pre-Blog!

Sorry - these are not in order but the March 2009 meeting was the very first.  The posts are taken from my "personal blog" before we started the actual Book Club Blog!

New Venture - Our very own book club!

Sorry, no photo - can you believe nobody snapped a photo at our inaugural meeting of the......______________ Book Club. And worse yet, we don't even have a name to go by!

A lovely group of 9 ladies met on Wednesday to start our book club. Check out Joyce - she posted a nice blurb about us!
She invited a friend, Cathy, who runs a Tea store. I invited my long-time friend from Scouting - Marianne And- I invited the neighbors, Gretchen, Lindy and Diane. Lindy invited a friend Charlee - who invited her friend/neighbor Luan. Really cool - we seem to be a diverse yet compatible group!

More as we read - first book - Water for Elephants....

Book Club outing!

Our book club is reading Jodi Picoult's new novel "House Rules" this month. She happened to be on a promotional tour yesterday at Meridith College - so some of our members got together and had a nice evening out.

After a good meal nearby, we headed over to Meridith. Amazing that I went to school at NC State for 4+ years and resided within 1/2 mile of Meridith - I had never been on their campus.

Jodi's talk was set up in a large auditorium - and was jam-packed. Here's our lovely ladies!

I had never read her books - but many of the club members had. Obviously, the audience contained MANY ardent fans.

Her talk and brief reading from the book was great! I will enjoy the book, I'm sure. She seems like someone you'd enjoy having over for coffee!

This has really nothing to do with the book club, except that I saw it written on the bathroom stall door in the auditorium....I was tickled by the 2X correction of the word "skys".....I guess there were two Meridith girls that hadn't studied their spelling/grammar too well!

Book club trip to the big city!

Our book club read last month was "To Kill a Mockingbird" in honor of it's recent 50th anniversary. Fortunately for us, The Burning Coal Theatre in Raleigh is preforming the show right now!

First we met at Mo's Diner for an early dinner. Yum, is all I can say. I'd never been there, but had heard great things.

One of the book club members had dined there a good bit and knew that one of the menu items was special - a grilled caesar salad...yes - the lettuce was actually grilled. Sounds weird - but it was wonderful! Added a scrumptious crab cake and I was very satisfied.

Then it was off a few blocks to the Burning Coal Theatre. It is in the old, historic Murphy School building just a few blocks from our first apartment on North Person Street (thirty years ago!!!)

No photos were allowed once the play started - but here we are. Aren't we special??? The play was extremely well-done - grab somebody and go if you're around the next few weeks!

Book Club - at UnWine'ed

Our Book Club book this month was a rather forgettable Nicholas Sparks blah blah blah which was titled "Best of Me". It should have been interesting since it was set in Oriental, NC.....(Nicholas Sparks is from New Bern and refused a request for a book signing in Oriental...so I think he's a perfect jerk....)

Any hoooo, our lovely ladies gathered at a neat place south of Pittsboro called UnWined.....and we had a wonderful evening! Oh, and by the way - our next month's book looks very intriguing.... Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and our hostess urged us to actually buy the hardcopy book - there are spectacular photos that inspired the book included that you don't get with the Kindle version!

Book club!

Last night was our monthly book club meeting. We rotate around to each others houses - this month it was at Marianne's (Just Marianne!). As a treat, she served us some wonderful homemade wine and a yummy banana cheescake - I know, not on my diet - but sometimes you just gotta!

Oh, and the book of the month was The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. Good book - sort of a tragedy told from the family dog's perspective.

Here are the lovely ladies! I'm off to the left and not visible in the photo...

Next month's book - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - looking forward to that one, hear it's a pretty good book.

Book Club!

Last night was book club at Lindy's house....always a good time. Good discussions about the book this month - "The Help" - lots of issues and a enjoyable, if disturbing, book. The discussions always tend to move about in tangents, much good fun - and a fabulous cherry brownie concoction - and, of course, the wine!!!!

Book Club Christmas Party

It's time for the once-yearly Book Club "Dirty Santa" party.....

First, our hostess had some nice goodies for us to munch on. We (very briefly) discussed our book - The Thorn Birds. I actually hate to admit it, but I did enjoy the rather long, epic story. It's really just a soap opera in one big book....but it's a fun read, anyway!

On to the "Dirty Santa" - lots of fun - several gifts got "stolen".  We had a "2 steal" rule - the 3rd person who has  a gift gets to keep it!

Decisions, decisions....

A nice, fun evening!!

Stormy Weather

Yesterday, one of our book club ladies invited us to their "posh" home-movie theater to view last month's book-club book - The Grapes of Wrath - in movie form.  Remember - the black and white Henry Fonda movie from 1940?

She provided the popcorn and candies - very nice!!!

And today has been just a lazy day....getting ready for the ice storm approaching.  Just a bit of sleet so far.  We went out and filled up the gas jugs to make sure we have plenty of "generator juice" if the power goes out.  And a trip to the grocery store for an extra loaf of bread.....then I made a big pot of veggie chili with the "beef" crumbles Mom brought me from the Seventh Day Adventist store.   We're all warm and comfy!

Book Club

I keep forgetting when I take photos with my phone! These are from our book club meeting last week....

Always a wonderful time! Lovely ladies, great conversations, great desserts and great wine!

Luan had given us each a candle on our plate - in a beautiful holder that was a family treasure. A real candle holder for use on a Christmas tree. Wow, that sounds like a house-fire waiting to happen! Luckly, ours were attached to fire-free ceramics!

See the books on the table? We actually do read and discuss them! And we eat and drink wine too, of course!! A really great group!

My precious book club ladies Christmas get-together

I know you're used to seeing this space set up for a certain Friday night card game.....

But tonight it was all about the ladies and our book club! 3 of the ladies were absent for very, very good reasons - but we managed to have a very nice time (we missed you Marianne, Nina and Charlee!)

We do a gift exchange/steal......the most popular this year were - herb cutter scissors, a beautiful scarf, and....drum roll please....a pair of cozy boots....

Yaay - I ended up with the boots - (mmm - sorry Joyce!) very warm and snuggly!!!

A wonderful way to start the holiday season! Hope all you gals have a great Holiday!! (Sorry Carol - didn't aim the auto-timer camera quite right, did I???)

"The Help" you gotta see it!

Our book club had read the book "The Help" several months ago....universally liked (which is unusual in our group!) We went to see the movie on opening night - it was PACKED - we could only find a couple of seats together and had to spread out in the theater!! Bravo - a really good movie - and you don't need to read the book first!!!
