Christmas 2016 Meeting

Thanks to Carol for hosting our Christmas meeting!!  As always, she is a gracious host!  Lots of fun discussion.....and we DID actually discuss this month's book selection - mostly points were raised about racism.

Random photos of the lovely ladies....

Drawing "numbers" for the "Dirty Santa" gift exchange game.

Brodie checked in to see what was going on.....then he retired to his sleeping pad.....

Gift exchange -  good fun!

All the loot!

Several gifts were "stolen"....

Good fun!!

October Meeting

Thanks Diane for the photos and Lindy for the summary.

The book this month, True Believer by Kati Marton was almost universally disliked!!  Several ladies did not read it....but that's OK!!   Luan says that she is unlikely to take recommendations from NPR interviews in the future!

Great spread, Claire - a big hit was the peanut-candy corn combo that tastes like a Payday bar.

Nice to have a visit by Charlee!

Our next book is "Small Great Things" by Jodie Picoult.  It deals with racism.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 6 at Carol's home.  We will discuss the book and do our regular "Dirty Santa" gift exchange and possibly play a game -  Luan brought up a new game that could be fun to play called "Catchphrase".

Be sure to check out the link at the right for other book ideas - our members have been busy lately!

September Meeting

We had a great crowd at Luan's for book club!!

Cute napkin.....and not true!!  Haha, well, maybe for some.....

As always, Luan put out a nice yummy spread for us to nibble and chat around!

And we had a fun discussion - a little bit about our mystical book this month, The Wood Wife.  Many liked the book, several hadn't read it.  Happy to report that no politics were discussed!!

Next months book will be a non-fiction book about a Communist spy in America in the 1920-30's!

True Believer by Kati Marton.  The meeting will be at Claire's house and hopefully it will be wonderful fall weather for a meeting on her lovely back porch!

Stay tuned for an invite from Carol's in-house movie theater to view "Me Before You" in the coming weeks.

And just a little look ahead - remember, no November meeting since it always interferes with Thanksgiving plans.  And Carol will host our "Christmas/December" meeting on December 6th for celebration and "dirty Santa", so start thinking of a fun inexpensive gift to share!

And finally, remember to take a look at the "Interesting Books" link at the right for reading ideas from the members.

August Meeting

Great meeting with lots of ladies attending!

We welcome Kerry to our group - hope you can join us in the future.

Thanks to MJ for inviting our author this month - Sharon Graham.  Great discussion of her book - Karma's Little Helper.

The author - with one of the actual inspirations for the book.

Beautiful bottle given to her years ago.

Scenes from the evening:

Next meeting will be the 4th Tuesday of September at Luan's house.

Stormy July Meeting

We were welcomed by the co-hosts Katherine and MJ!   At Katherine's lovely home in the woods near Jordan Lake.

Great spread - lots of chatting before we got down to "book club business".

Most enjoyed parts of the book -  Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Eirk Larson.  The summary of the comments are that we would have enjoyed a little more "drama" rather than mostly a history lesson.  But, we all agreed that we had learned some things about the lead-up to the involvement of the USA in WWI.

Worthy of note is that there was a LOUD and CLOSE lightning strike during one of two thunderstorms that blew over!

Of much entertainment value was Katherine's lovely little dachshund.   I tried to get a photo of him.....but he was just an energetic blurr.

Even Nancy couldn't hold him still!!!

MJ chose the August book - Karma's Little Helper, is by a local author, Sharon Graham.  It is available on Amazon - or contact MJ if you want her to pick you up a copy.

Tentatively the August meeting will be the 5th Tuesday - August 30th at Karen's house (if MJ confirms that the author is available that day).

Be sure to check out the "Other Books" link for ideas on summer reading material!

June Meeting

Great meeting at Diane's house today!!

After everyone enjoyed the spread......

Good "round-table" discussion.

This month's book  concerns the funeral industry and customs.  Interesting discussion - we all agreed that we learned alot reading this book!

Fun discussion!

And we welcomed Ann - friend of a friend from Michigan. Hope she enjoyed our group and will continue to attend!

Next month's meeting will be at Katherine's house, hosted by Katherine/MJ.

And next month's book will be Dead Wake: Last Crossing of the Lusitania
by Erik Larson  (author of our previous book club book - Devil in the White City)

Be sure to check out the "other books we're reading" link on the right.

May Meeting

We had a good discussion of this month's book - A Man Called Ove.

General feedback was that the book may have been a bit hard to get "into".  But,  once we understood the main character, we all liked him.

We also want to welcome a new member - Nancy Dail!  She's Carol's friend from Silk Hope and we hope she'll enjoy our little group!

(really, ladies....next time I take a photo you have to look like you're having fun!!! )

Next month's pick by Lindy is:

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory

April Meeting

One of our best book club meetings ever!!

Our author this month, Barbara Claypole White, attended our meeting!  She was gracious, witty, informative and forthcoming with us about the publishing business and the writing process.  Lots and lots of questions about the characters in The Perfect Son.

Claire did a great job, as usual, with snacks and wine, of course!

Sorry for the dim photos....since it's always close to dark outside, the photos are usually less than perfect.

We all really enjoyed hearing Barbara discuss the characters in the book - how they evolved and some of their basis in real life.

Be sure to check out her other books:

And be on the lookout for her new book this fall!

Next meeting will be at Lindy's house - May 24th and the next read is "A Man Called Ove" by Fredrik Backman.

Don't forget to check out the "other books we're reading" link if you're looking for your next book to read!
