Kudos to Jean (and John) - thanks for a lovely book club evening! The weather cooperated and gave us a pleasant atmosphere to sit on the porch. Snacks were wonderful!
First order of business was to take a "virtual tour" of John and Jean's house that is under construction next door at their hangar/blacksmith shop/apartment. Looking forward to it's completion and sipping wine by the pool for the next book club meeting at the finished house!
We had a nice discussion of "Everything I Never Told You" - the book was enjoyed by all.
Be sure to check out the "Other books we're reading" list at the right. There are some interesting titles in there to add to your list!
Looking forward to the June meeting at Bonnie's house - the 100th book club selection is White Teeth by Zadie Smith. Here is Amazon's summary:
Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read
At the center of this invigorating novel are two unlikely friends,
Archie Jones and Samad Iqbal. Hapless veterans of World War II, Archie
and Samad and their families become agents of England’s irrevocable
transformation. A second marriage to Clara Bowden, a beautiful, albeit
tooth-challenged, Jamaican half his age, quite literally gives Archie a
second lease on life, and produces Irie, a knowing child whose
personality doesn’t quite match her name (Jamaican for “no problem”).
Samad’s late-in-life arranged marriage (he had to wait for his bride to
be born), produces twin sons whose separate paths confound Iqbal’s every
effort to direct them, and a renewed, if selective, submission to his
Islamic faith. Set against London’ s racial and cultural tapestry,
venturing across the former empire and into the past as it barrels
toward the future, White Teeth revels in the ecstatic hodgepodge
of modern life, flirting with disaster, confounding expectations, and
embracing the comedy of daily existence.
